Honeywell employees told to take furloughs

Honeywell International Inc. has told its 9,500 Arizona employees to take an unpaid week off this quarter.

The company in November announced about 100 layoffs affecting its global operations and unpaid days off that had to be taken by the end of 2015.

Honeywell is tied with American Airlines Group and The Home Depot Inc. as the state's ninth largest company in terms of employees.

Honeywell Aerospace workers on Wednesday were told the earlier measures will not be sufficient to manage company costs, and that most employees will have to take off June 27 through July 3. The company also is canceling the merit-increase program for the year, employees were told.

"We are implementing some short-term cost controls in light of the slower global economy and recent aerospace industry-wide market challenges and volatility as noted by many of our biggest customers," communications director Scott Sayres said in a prepared statement. "We remain confident in the long-term growth of our aerospace business."

In November, company officials said they would seek to reduce headcount via attrition, voluntary retirements and back-filling open positions.
